Jaipur: A year-old woman has alleged that she was tortured and paraded half-naked on a donkey by relatives who wanted to grab her property at Kameri-Chouhan village in Bhilwara district, police said on Sunday. Preliminary investigations revealed that it was a land dispute in which the woman and her five relatives, including her foster son, were involved, the SHO said. In her statement, the woman told the Investigating Officer that she was made to put her thumb impression on some papers, the SHO said. He said no eyewitnesses have come forward so far. The village panchayat of Kameri-Chouhan which met on November 23 had ruled that no one should buy her land and promote any deal to any buyer, the SHO said, quoting the village head.

As per a TOI report, "The matter came to light after the victim's husband lodged an FIR, the police on Sunday arrested 30 persons, nine of them from the victim's family. Senior police officers said that the woman has been shifted to a shelter home for the time being and she was being counseled. The shocking punishment was given to her after the panchayat accused the woman of killing her nephew, Vardi Singh. As per police officials, Vardi Singh's wife suspected that his aunt had killed him and thus, approached the local community panchayat which after hearing the case publicly declared her guilty and said she should be punished for what she has done. As per the report, the woman was stripped at a place in the middle of the village. The panchayat members blackened her face with coal and forced her to sit on a donkey. After all this humiliation, she was paraded through out the village for nearly an hour.

A woman in northern India has been stripped naked and paraded on a donkey on the orders of village elders after being accused of killing her nephew. The village council in Rajsamand district in Rajasthan state also ordered the year-old woman's face to be blackened. Orders given by village councils - panchayats - carry no legal weight but are widely respected in rural areas.
